Lindsay & Wayne Comstock
Married August 30, 2008 – Montrose, CO
THE DETAILS
How long to plan wedding: one year
Budget: $15,000
Number of Guests: 85, with guests from Michigan, California, Utah, and Colorado
Wedding Location: Private Ranch (Rusty Owl) which is up in the mountains, near Buckhorn Lakes in Montrose.
Biggest planning challenge: We asked guests to
respond by a certain date so that we had enough time to figure out the seating
chart and give the entree quantities to the caterer. Half the guests did not respond on time or at all. Some guests who we knew were coming
didn't even respond. So, we had to call
these people a week before the wedding and ask them what they would like as
their entree choice. It made it
difficult and frustrating.
Wedding
Theme: Nature inspired.
The Décor: The wedding colors were brown, ivory, yellow, and orange. The tent was decorated with espresso tablecloths. White lights lined the tent with tealight candles on each table.
The Flowers: The flowers were arranged by my Mom, my mother in law, my Grandma and her sister. The flower arrangements were made up of tall curly willow with yellow, orange and magenta alstromeria and were placed in very tall simple cylinder vases. Small crystals were hung on the curly willow to reflect the light and add interest. They made such a statement and kept with the nature theme.
The Menu: The menu was created by Janice from Pine Cone Catering, and was amazing! We had prime rib, garlic halibut, and parmesan chicken. For the sides we had Blue Sunflower salad, red potatoes, and a vegetable pasta salad. People said it was the best prime rib they ever had!
The Favors: The favors were natural agate coasters which were placed on each guest’s plate.
The Cake: Our cake was designed by me. We had a
four tier cake which each layer being a different flavor. Raspberry Blackout, Chocolate mousse, Cappucino, and Chocolate Marble. Two little birds sat on the top layer as our toppers, real twigs and sugar paste flowers decorated the cake. It was so
cute!
SPECIAL TOUCHES
Our ceremony was truly unique and special to us. We had two parts to our ceremony; Wayne's Uncle performed part of our ceremony, as well as the Ute Indian Chief who blessed us and performed a traditional Native American ceremony. It had deep meaning and the words that he spoke touched everyone in attendance.
After our ceremony, Roland, the Ute Indian Chief led us and all of our guests, to a clearing in the woods where we made a huge circle and we danced to the beat of his drum. It was so fun and it got everyone loosened up to have a great time!!
My Mom painted the guest’s names on river rocks, with the table number they were to sit at on the back of the rock.
Wayne (my husband) made the alter as a surprise for me out of aspen trees and branches.
A few friends and family performed the song "The Way I Am" by Ingrid Michaelson. Alona sang, Aaron played guitar, and Shannon played the bongo. It was so great and very special.
Wayne and I had our own little table for ourselves. The bridal party sat on both sides of us with their dates. This made it so that we could have our own time together and so the bridesmaids and groomsmen could sit with their dates.
The toasts: Everyone who said something meant so much to us and it was great to hear. Parts were funny, some really sad, but most of all we were overwhelmingly happy and thankful to have all these people around us.
Rehearsal Dinner Location: We had a pig roast at our home for all of our guests the night before the wedding. It was a little stressful being the hosts, but it was worth it to have all of our out-of-town guests over.
What went wrong? Not too much. A few people got flat tires going to the ceremony. Overall, we were really lucky on the weather. The next day it rained all day.
What would you do different? I would have tried to find someone to handle the details of the day. I would have liked to have my Mom around me instead of arranging flowers.
Our Advice:
1. Relax, don't worry about the
small things. Enjoy the planning
process, it's fun but it can get stressful. It's the only time in your life when you'll plan something so huge together.
2. Hire a wedding coordinator.
